Abstract

817,196. Batteries. VARLEY DRY ACCUMULATORS Ltd. March 21, 1958 [April 12, 1957; Feb. 26, 1958], Nos. 12082/57 and 6304/58. Class 53. The plate lugs 16, 17 of an accumulator pass through slots in the base of a trough 19 cemented to the walls of the container which may be divided into two cells by a partition 11 as shown in Fig. 3. The lugs are connected by a conductor 24 and the trough is then filled with an epoxy or other thermosetting resin, and closed by a cover 25. Two separate troughs are used to receive the lugs of the positive and negative plates of the end cell from which the terminals project. The COD- tainer has a vented lid 26, and the troughs may be moulded in one piece with the lid as shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a modificaton in which the container is inverted before the plates and separators are inserted through the open bottom. The plate lugs 16, 17 are connected by a conductor 24 and a thermosetting resin poured in to embed the lugs and conductor and to form the bottom of the container. Terminal wires 56 may be embedded in the walls of the container and connected to terminals 57. When the container is again inverted to occupy its normal position a gas space 43 is left at the top, and filling openings 44 and gas vents 48 communicating with a gas chamber 50 are provided on the under surface of the cover 37. The gases may be led from the chamber 50 to an exhaust pipe.
