Abstract

690,088. Batteries. ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY CO. Jan. 23, 1952 [March 31, 1951], No. 1858/52. Class 53. An accumulator comprising a number of cells 28 formed by partitions 27 as shown in part sectional plan in Fig. 3, is provided with a cover member 30 sealed into recesses in the walls 10 and partitions 27. The cover is provided with two openings 31, 32, leading into manifolds 33, 36 from which tubes 35, 38 depend into each cell, the tubes 35 terminating at the electrolyte level and the tubes 38 at a higher level as shown in Fig. 1. The cells are filled through the opening 32 and tubes 38, the operation being completed when electrolyte rises in the tubes 35 and is seen in the manifold 33 and opening 31. When the battery is in use the opening 31 is closed by a solid plug and the opening 32 by a vented plug through which gases escape. The filling manifold 36 is tapered in cross-section as shown in Fig. 3 and the dimensions of the filling opening 32, manifold 36 and tubes 38 are such that the manifold and tubes are maintained full of liquid during the filling operation. The upper part 11 of the battery may be sufficiently large to receive all the electrolyte when the battery is inverted, the lower ends of the tubes 35, 38 remaining-above the electrolyte level.
