Abstract
572,968. Endless-chain conveyers. CALLENDER'S CABLE & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., and RICHARDSON, A. B. F. G. Aug. 26, 1943, No. 13964. [Class 78 (i)] An electric cable is moved longitudinally by a pair of endless driving chains which are arranged side by side in the same plane and grip the cable between them, and one or each of which is mounted on a support which permits relative swinging movement. The cable 32, Fig. 1, is gripped between endless chains A, B each of which is passed round a driving sprocket 3 and an idler sprocket 5 mounted between pairs of plates 6. The plates are supported by frames 7, 8 each of which is pivotally mounted on uprights 33, Fig. 2, and is connected by links 46, Fig. 3, to the crosshead of the piston of a hydraulic cylinder 40. Each chain is supported by brackets 31 and carries a series of curved plates 28 fitted with pads for engaging the cable. The chains are backed by stiff plates 30 which ensure the exertion of a substantially uniform pressure on the cable. Each sprocket 3 is fast on a shaft 4 which is mounted in a bearing 9 on the frame 8 and is driven through bevel gears 37, 38 by a shaft 39. Bevel gears 52, 53 connect the shaft 39 to a shaft 54 which is connected by gears 56, 57 to the main driving shaft 58. This shaft is driven through hydraulic variable speed gearing 60, and its speed is controlled by brake drums 61. When the apparatus is used for laying submarine cables, two pairs of chains 70, 71, Fig. 5, are provided, the arrangement being such that one pair is always in engagement with the cable.
