Abstract
1415306 Reversing gear F E COOPER and H R MORTON 27 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 43941/72 Heading F2D In a power transmission mechanism suitable for small marine craft an input shaft 1 drives an output shaft 6 in the forward direction by belting 15 and in the reverse direction by frictional engagement between wheels 4, 9, the input shaft being mounted on a subframe 3 which is movable about a pivot p by cam mechanism 12 to select forward or reverse or an intermediate neutral condition. Preferably the belt drive consists of multiple Vee belts and the wheels 4, 9 are of multiple Vee formation and pressed together during reverse operation by a rubber block 16. When the belts are slackened for neutral or reverse drive a pair of pivotally mounted guards 17 mechanically coupled with the subframe 3 are moved towards the belts to restrain them against their tendency to assume a circular form so that they are effectively disengaged from the pulleys.
