Abstract

544,559. Converting reciprocating into rotary motion; chain gearing; Bowden and like mechanism. CRASKE, A. H., and GANDELL, W. R. K. Nov. 22, 1940, No. 16783. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (iii)] A wheel f", Fig. 1, is rotated by engaging an endless chain a passing over sprockets c, c' and driven by a oonnecting-rod e. connected for example to a piston f. The chain is kept in engagement with the wheel by a guide plate z. Preferably the chain is duplicated as at a, a<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, and engages two wheels f', f" on the same shaft. The connecting-rod e is attached to a transverse member b attached to enlarged links of the chains. In a modification, the endless chains are replaced by rollers running in endless tracks the rollers being reduced in diameter at their central portions to engage the teeth of the wheels and the two sets of rollers being connected by a transverse member. The rollers may be separated by blocks and are prevented from moving axially in the tracks by retaining plates.
