[Class 64 (i)] In a recuperator for preheating air &c. by hot furnace gases &c. comprising a series of courses or tiers of tubular conduits with any number of side-by-side conduits in each course, the conduits being formed of a plurality of tubular blocks 1, Fig. 6, placed end to end to form a row with the blocks of one row staggered in relation to those of an adjacent row, each block is of square tubular form and has enlarged ends with outwardly projecting vertical flanges 2 at opposite sides and also an intermediate enlargement 3 with vertical channels 4. The said enlarged portions of the blocks define encircling passages 5 for the air to be heated, and the channels 4 of each block receive the meeting end flanges 2 of two abutting blocks in the laterally adjacent rows, the flanges 2 of the first block also engaging the channels 4 in these latter blocks. Halfblocks are employed alternately at opposite ends of adjacent lateral rows to form flat end surfaces to the recuperator, and, at the sides of the recuperator, side blocks 6 are located at one side of each horizontal course or tier and flat slabs or tiles 10 at the other side, tiles 10 being interposed vertically between side blocks 6 as shown, and both having vertical flanges 2 and channels 4 on their inner sides.
