Abstract

In reclaiming rubber, particularly that associated with cellulosic fibres such as tyres, hose, &c., the material is heated by saturated steam under a pressure corresponding to a temperature of 230-270 DEG C. or by steam at a lower pressure superheated, e.g. by electric heaters, to this temperature. The rubber is softened in 2 to 4 hours and the fibres are tendered or carbonized. Alkali and plasticizing agents may be present. After the heating, the steam pressure is reduced and the vessel is flooded with water to cool the rubber before it comes into contact with air.
