471,618. Shaping textile materials. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. May 29, 1936, No. 15282. Convention date, May 29. 1935. [Class 100 (ii)] A process for shaping articles from textile material containing filaments of a thermoplastic derivative of cellulose comprises gripping the material at points where it is not to be distorted and shaping the material while it is at least partially plastic between coacting mould sections 1, 5. One or both of the mould sections may have yielding surfaces 3, 6 of felt, cotton duck, flannel, ground cork, or similar material. The gripping of the fabric is effected by a member 13 spring-mounted on one of the mould sections by means of bolts 14 passing through springs 15 and adapted to engage a recess 12 in the other section, the member 13 surrounding the area of the material being treated. A separate member 13 and recess 12 may be provided for each cavity in the lower die 1. The material, which may comprise several single thicknesses, is rendered partially plastic during the shaping operation by being heated, and a plasticizing agent may be employed to assist in this operation. In the latter case, the yielding surfaces 3, 6 may be immersed or wetted in water or a solution containing a plasticizer prior to or during the shaping operation. For this purpose, ducts 4, 7 connected to the mould surfaces by lines 8, 9 are provided in the mould sections whereby water, steam, or plasticizers may be injected into the mould cavities during the shaping operation. Some or all of the ducts 4 may be replaced by openings in which any suitable type of electric heating-element or flame burner may be placed. Articles such as brassieres, suspensories, girdles, gloves, hats, shoes, rigid or semi-rigid containers, flexible bag-like structures, and pouches may be shaped in the manner described.
