Abstract

A material suitable for use as an upholstery covering consisting of a layer of foam rubber on one side of a flexible sheet is permanently grooved or otherwise shaped after vulcanization of the rubber, by confining it between two shaping tools and applying pressure thereto. The shaping tools may be in the nature of a platen press or of a two-roll calender as described in the parent Specification, and the shaping may be effected at an elevated temperature e.g., 110 DEG -120 DEG C. and at a pressure of e.g., 400-600 lb. per sq. in., but the temperature should not exceed 160 DEG C. nor the pressure 2000 lb. per sq. in. The material may be heated whilst confined between the shaping tools by high frequency heating, or by circulation of hot water, steam, &c. within the tools or by electric heating elements in the tools. The flexible sheet may be a textile fabric, leathercloth or plasticized P.V.C. compositions.
