Abstract

333,268. Stephens, A. J., (Collins & Aikman Corporation). April 9, 1929, Pile fabrics are made by embedding the free ends of the pile threads 7, projecting from the woven backing 1, 2 of a pile fabric in an adherent material 10, solidifiable into a backing which may be reinforced by a backing 11 comprising a woven or felted fabric, the pile threads being cut at 9 between the original backing 1, 2 and the new backing 10, 11 to furnish a fresh pile fabric having the pile threads secured uniformly to the new backing 10, 11. By a similar process this may be made into two fabrics as shown in Fig. 3, and so on. The body of the original fabric may be reinforced by an applied adhesive composition before the new backing is applied, and the pile threads may be temporarily stiffened by means of a soluble size. The original pile fabric may be made from a fabric woven double and split; or it may comprise slightly twisted slivers or rovings looped through a woven backing either during or after weaving, or a terry fabric the uncut loops of which are embedded in an adherent composition. This may comprise a dispersion of rubber containing a vulcanizer, an oxide and an accellerator or solidifiable cellulose compositions such as viscose or pyroxylin solutions, or rubber or rubber and glue solutions, or casein. Solidification may be affected by coagulation, vulcanization, or heating, and decorative effects may be obtained by colouring or embossing the composition, which may be independent of the pile decoration resulting from printing, cutting, singeing, and acid treatment. Adherent compositions such as those used in the manufacture of artificial leather or artificial silk may be used.
