Abstract
569,129. Gun cartridges and projectiles. SMITH, W. H. Nov. 1, 1940, No. 16003. Divided out of 572,545. [Class 9 (i)] A cartridge particularly for muzzle-loaded guns, comprises a twopart case, the front part of which a has a cylindrical wall b, of smaller diameter than the gun bore, within which is secured the flanged edge of a back-plate f. The front and back parts are additionally connected by a central stem c which receives a priming charge and a primer e. The stem has a screwed extension k by which the cartridge is connected to the base of the projectile. On discharge, a pressure is built up within the cartridge which finally disrupts the joint between the front and back parts of the case and expands the wall b into gas-sealing contact with the bore of the gun ; the back-plate f is deformed, as shown in dotted lines, and the case leaves the gun attached to the projectile.
