Abstract
568,789. Luminescent materials. TYRER & CO., Ltd., T., PEARCE SIGNS, Ltd., and SNOOK, H. H. Feb. 27, 1943, No. 3264. [Class 39 (i)] A fluorescent material comprises cadmium beryllium metasilicate with a suitable activator, preferably manganese. The molecular proportion of cadmium to beryllium may vary between 3 to 1, which gives a salmon colour, and 1 to 3, which gives a lilac colour ; with a proportion of 3 to 2, rose pink is obtained. Pure cadmium metasilicate is prepared by precipitating cadmium sulphate and sodium metasilicate. To this is added the desired proportion of silica and beryllium oxide and 1.5 per cent manganese dioxide. The mixture is heated for four hours at 950-1000‹ C. A second heating at 1000‹ C. with an added 10 per cent of silica may be employed. The sintered mass is then reduced to 50Á particles by a process of grinding, sieving and elutriation. The material may be excited by a mercury vapour discharge ; or by cathode rays, for which 10-100 parts per million of iron or nickel oxide may be added to reduce afterglow. The material may be mixed with other fluorescent materials and applied to coloured envelopes.
