Abstract

568,790. Luminescent materials. TYRER & CO., Ltd., T., PEARCE SIGNS, Ltd., and SNOOK, H. H. FÞb. 27, 1943, No. 3265. [Class 39 (i)] A fluorescent material comprises zinc metasilicate activated by manganese dioxide and by an amount of beryllium oxide which does not exceed 1 per cent by weight of the final product. One gram-molecule of pure zinc oxide is mixed with 1-1.25 gram-molecule of pure silica obtained by treating sodium silicate solution with strong sulphuric acid; to this is added 2-4 per cent, preferably 3 per cent, of manganese dioxide and 0.9-1 per cent, preferably 0.95 per cent, of beryllium oxide. The mixture is heated at 1050-1200‹ C., preferably 1175‹ C., for four hours, ground, and then reheated to 1200‹ C. Up to 10 per cent of silica may be added before the second heating. The sintered mass is reduced to about 50 Á particles, by a process of grinding, sieving and elutriation. At the preferred percentage of beryllium a bright yellow fluorescence is obtained when the material is excited by a mercury vapour or rare gas discharge or by cathode rays. For cathode-ray tubes in which it is desired to reduce afterglow, from 10 to 100 parts per million of iron or nickel oxide may be added. The material may be mixed with other fluorescent material and applied to discharge tubes with coloured envelopes.
