[Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A printing plate having embossed printing characters is provided along one or both of its longer edges with a flange which has one face lying below the adjacent face of the plate and has its free edge and corners rounded, the flange enabling the plate to be attached to a carrier frame for use in machines such as addressing machines. In one form, Fig. 4, the flanges 12 have parallel faces, one of which is flush with the back of the plate P, while in a second form, Fig. 11, the flanges 12b are inclined. Both constructions permit of greater spacing between the printing plane of the printing characters and the outer faces of the retaining devices LB, RD to minimize the possibility of an inked impression being made by the devices LB, RD if excessive printing pressure is used. The flanged plates may be used with ordinary carrier frames, as shown in Fig. 5, by embossing the characters from the opposite side of the plate. The free edges of the flanges may be straight or sinuous, and the flanges may be continuous from end to end of the plate or in the form of spaced short flange portions. The plates may be made from separate blanks or from a strip 5, Fig. 14, notches K defining the corners of the plates being provided in the opposite edges of the strip. The shorter ends of the blanks are provided adjacent the notches with inclined portions G so that, these edges, after the formation of the flanges by a rolling, stamping or extruding operation which causes the metal to flow longitudinally, shall be straight throughout. The blanks may also be made from a strip, the width of which is slightly greater than the finished length of the blanks to provide margins to facilitate feeding the strip through the metal-working machine. The blanks may also be formed from a strip of a width equal to the width of the plates.
