[Class 74 (ii)] A straight - bar machine equipped with automatic welt-turning apparatus including a, welt bar 10 movable away from and towards the needles during the production of the welt and the restoration of the welt loops to the needles, and with biassed draw-off apparatus for connection to a welt rod 15, is provided with mechanism for relaxing the pull upon the welt rod during the advance of the welt bar towards the needles. The beam roller 12 to which the welt rod carrying straps 14 are attached, is biassed to rotate in the draw-off direction by a weight 16, and the tension releasing mechanism comprises a pawl-and-ratchet wheel mechanism 21, 19 for rotating the beam in the opposite direction. The pawl 21 is mounted upon a. carrier 20 which is oscillated by a chain 24 or other flexible member connected at one end to the carrier and at its other end to a lever 27 operated by a cam 31 upon a lay shaft 32 rotated at the same speed as the main shaft. The cam-engaging truck 30 is shogged into and out of engagement with the cam 31 by a fork 36 actuated by patterning mechanism 33. A bluff 22, adjustable by screw means 37, is provided for holding the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 19 during the normal knitting operations. The pawl has a projection 23 engaged beneath the chain 24 so that the pawl moves inwards to engage the ratchet wheel when the chain tightens upon the carrier 20.
