[Class 74 (ii)] The fabric take-up means of a circular machine includes a circular driving member 3, the eccentricity of which with respect to the axis of the needle cylinder determines the speed of rotation of the take-up roller or rollers. The member 3 may be adjusted manually, or automatically when changes are made in the knitting operations. The manual adjusting means comprises a screw 19 acting against a spring 16. For automatically adjusting the disc or member 3 a vertical push rod 21 is provided, having a wedge-shaped part 22 for action upon a roller 14 carried by the ring. The rod 21 is controlled by a pattern drum or a timing chain. The intermediate mechanism through which the disc 3 imparts intermittent rotation to the take-up rollers 2 may comprise a friction ratchet mechanism including a disc 36 keyed to one of the rollers, and a driver 37 having a part oscillating about the periphery of the disc 36, balls or rollers being placed between the disc 36 and the driver. Inclined or cam surfaces are arranged upon either the disc 36 or the driver, so that movement of the driver 37 in one direction wedges the balls or rollers and transmits the drive to the takeup roller, and movement in the opposite direction releases the balls or rollers. The driver 37 may consist of a disc freely mounted coaxially with the disc 36, or of a lever formed with a similar operative part, and is operated by means of a bell-crank lever 47 one arm 47<1> of which carries a roller 52 engaging the eccentric driving disc 3. A block with strips or shoes of leather may be provided for preventing fluff &c. entering the ratchet mechanism, and a brake device may prevent reverse rotation of the take-up rollers.
