Abstract

[Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XI] In the manufacture of articles from fibrous material and an adhesive by electricallygenerated heat, the heat generated at various parts is controlled by using materials having different electric loss factors, i.e. dielectric loss, ohmic loss, eddy current loss, or hysteresis loss. Material with a higher loss factor may be used near the surface to compensate. for radiation losses or in thicker parts of the article. Added substances may be carbonaceous matter, graphite, carbon black, or acetylene black, an electrolyte or ionogen, e.g. an organic acid or a salt, or fine metal particles. The fibrous material may be in the form of loose fibres, wood laminµ, paper, textile fabric, or pulp. The adhesive may be a natural glue or resin, or a synthetic thermosetting or thermoplastic material, or a synthetic rubber. Fibrous laminµ may be interleaved with solid films of adhesive. An article may be built up of fibrous laminµ of different thickness, an adhesive of high electric loss being used for bonding the thick laminµ, and lower loss for the thinner laminµ. Long laminµ may be interleaved with shorter laminµ in places, an adhesive of high electric loss being used for the short laminµ and lower loss for the longer laminµ. When an article is built up of laminated boards, the boards may be bonded with a low-loss adhesive and united together with a higher loss adhesive. The frequency may be in the range of megacycles, or may be reduced to 50.
