Abstract

1,015,724. Laminates. E. A. DUFFIELD. Nov. 26, 1963 [Dec. 11, 1962], No. 46702/62. Heading B5N. A composite material is made by compressing a plurality of porous sheets, each sheet having applied to one or both sides thereof a mixture of a natural or synthetic resin, and powdered slate, mica or steatite having a particle size not greater than 50 B.S.S. mesh, the weight of mineral powder to resin being at least 1: 1, the compression being such as to remove stratification from the material. Preferably the porous sheet is paper, although textile fabrics e.g. linen or silk, or open weave mineral fabrics e.g. silica fabric, glass fabric or glass fibre sheets may be used. Preferably the mineral used is in micronized form. The resin may be thermosetting, e.g. a lac, a phenolic, an epoxy, a vinyl acetate polymer, a polyester, an urea, a melamine or a silicone resin, or thermoplastic e.g. a vinyl chloride polymer, a polyolefine such as polyethylene or polypropylene, polystyrene, an acrylic or methacrylic resin or P.T.F.E. Wire mesh may also be incorporated with the laminae. In the production of the laminates, a liquid mixture of the resin and the mineral powder is applied to the porous sheets by usual methods, e.g. coating rollers, brushing or passing the sheet through an impregnating bath, a plurality of the sheets are superimposed to form a stack, and compressed at a suitable temperature. The resin may be a solution in an inert solvent, e.g. methylated spirits, the sheets being dried after impregnation thereof. The laminate may be formed in a hydraulic press at a pressure of 1000-2000 p.s.i. and if the resin is thermosetting, the plates may be heated e.g. from 50-200‹ C. to cure the resin, a suitable curing time being from 20-35 minutes.
