Abstract
A sheet-like mouldable composition comprises a mat of fibres within the interstices of which is dispersed from 2% to 70% by weight of total solids of a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin in the form of unfused particles between 0.01 and 0.55 microns in size. The fibres used are preferably hollow cellular jute fibres but may be of cellulose, glass, nylon, rayon, coconut, brass, aluminium or steel. When the fibres are of jute, some of the binder particles penetrate into the hollow cells of the fibres. The binder is preferably polyvinyl chloride, but the specification includes a list of other suitable binders. The fibrous material is preferably needled or otherwise mechanically treated in the first place to form a compacted web which is then immersed in an impregnating bath containing a dispersion of the resin material. The impregnated web is dried by means of hot air. The fibres may be reinforced with a woven or matted layer of burlap, cotton cloth or netting. A moulded product may be made by forming the sheet-like composition under heat and pressure. The mat may be folded upon itself where bends or corners are to be formed, so that the mat is compacted to a greater extent in these places than elsewhere.
