Abstract
The resilient firmness of fabric materials comprising a woven base fabric with filamentary fibres needled therein is improved by impregnating them with rubber or a synthetic elastomer, e.g. neoprene, nitrile rubber or a vinyl, silicone or urethane elastomer and then curing or gelling the rubber or synthetic elastomer. Curing or gelling may be effected with calendering or pressing. The base fabric may be woven from synthetic fibre yarns, e.g. polyester or nylon yarns, or natural fibre yarns, e.g. cotton or yarns blended from natural and synthetic fibres. The fibres which are needled in may be natural or synthetic and during needling 500-2500 penetrations per square inch may be made, the base fabric preferably being supported under tension in the direction of the lengthwise yarns during needling. If the woven base fabric contains synthetic yarns the fabric material may be stabilised by heating either before and/or after needling but prior to impregnation. If the woven base fabric contains natural fibre yarns stabilisation may be effected by carrying out the needling step with the woven base fabric under substantial tension. Impregnation may be effected by immersion or by applying a layer of latex to the fabric material and causing it to be absorbed with or without heat and/or pressure. The impregnated materials may be coated with rubber or a synthetic elastomer after drying and prior to curing or gelling. The materials may be used for conveyor belts or in gaskets, diaphragms, bushings or washers.ALSO:The resilient firmness of fabric materials comprising a woven base fabric with filamentary fibres needled therein is improved by impregnating them with rubber or a synthetic elastomer, e.g. neoprene, nitrile rubber or a vinyl, silicone or urethane elastomer, drying, coating them with rubber or a synthetic elastomer and then curing or gelling the rubber or synthetic elastomer.
