530,847. Coated fabrics ; vulcanizing. NATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE FIBRES, Inc. June 20, 1939, No. 17998. Convention date, March 8. [Class 140] [Also in Group V] A floor covering comprises a fabric 60, Fig. 4, such as burlap coated on the upper side with adhesive 63 in which flock pile of upstanding fibres 64 such as goat hair is embedded at one end and having a layer of sponge rubber 61 secured to its lower surface. A layer of fabric 62 may be vulcanized to the sponge rubber. The adhesive is preferably a rubber cement comprising a petroleum or coal tar solvent which penetrates through the fabric and softens the blowing rubber stock, uniting the two layers through the fabric. The rubber cement may be applied over a coating of neoprene or chloroprene, or these substances may be included in the rubber cement. The fabric, coated by the apparatus described in Specification 530,868, is passed into a vulcanizing chamber 50, Fig. 5, where the blowing rubber stock forms sponge rubber which is vulcanized to the fabric. In order to avoid unduly long vulcanizing chambers, a series of conveyers 51 are used, lengths of the fabric being directed to each conveyer in succession over an adjustable plate 53 hinged at 54, each conveyer when full being stopped for the time necessary for vulcanization.
