Abstract

1417696 Non-woven fabrics LANTOR LTD and AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS LTD 22 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 60004/71 Heading D1R A non-woven web usable as a filter medium at temperatures in excess of 200‹C comprises a web of poly-(m-phenyleneisophthalamide) fibres preliminarily bonded by chemical and/or physical means and then further bonded by a resin condensation product of an aralkyl ether and phenol. The web may be corded, garnetted, or air-laid and. the fibres may be cross-linked, randomly laid or parallel laid. Preliminary mechanical bonding may comprise needling or stitching with or without yarn. Preliminary chemical bonding may use 12-20% by wt. of a natural rubber latex, a styrene-butadiene rubber latex or vinyl acetatevinyl acrylate copolymer. Excess binder may be removed by squeezing rollers or suction and the web dried. Drying on one side only displaces binder producing a binder gradient. The fabric may then be pressed. The fabric is then passed through a solution of the resin then either through nip rollers and along a horizontal lattice support with hot air directed on the top surface so as to produce a resin gradient, or passed up a vertical drying tower so that the resin migrates to both surfaces. The resin is preferably cured at a high enough temperature to decompose and remove any preliminary binder and thus produce a filter in which the porosity varies through the thickness. The resin may comprise 20% by weight of the fibres.
