Abstract

1364422 Non-woven fabrics BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 31 Aug 1971 [29 Aug 1970] 41874/70 Heading D1R [Also in Division A3] Shoe insoles are cut from a non-woven sheet comprising nylon fibres (20 to 40% of the fibre wt.) and cellulose fibres (60 to 80%) bonded by a binding agent comprising thermoplastic material. The cellulose fibre may be a mixture of acetate rayon and viscose rayon. The fibres are 1¢ to 3 inches long and comprise 39 to 54% by wt. of the dry sheet. The binder is a mixture of vinyl chloride copolymerised with a little acrylate and a butadiene/acrylonitrile latex or a copolymer of styrene/butadiene plus a third monomer. The fibres are garnetted and crosslaced into a random fibre batt. The batt is needled twice on each side, payed through a dispersion of the binder, calandered to remove excess dispersion, air dride at 90‹C, heated to 125‹C to cure the butadiene/acrylonitrile latex and given a gloss on one side by passage around a smooth steel drum at 160‹C. Alternatively the dried sheet may be embossed in a press. The sheet may be sprayed with a diluted binder dispersion be'fore the treatment to give a gloss or embossed surface. The insole is incorporated into the shoe by a hot melt cement lasting process.
