Abstract
923,127. Laminates. K. E. S. EKSELIUS. July 29, 1959, No. 26022/59. Class 140. A laminated fibrous structure is produced from three coherent layers of which the inner one consists of an inorganic fibrous material, e.g. a thin mat of randomly oriented fibres or a woven fabric of glass fibre, and the two outer layers consist of vegetable fibres, e.g. felts of jute fibres. The inner layer is coated with a pasty mixture of an unsaturated polyester, e.g. one formed from ethylene glycol and maleic acid, a monomeric unsaturated compound to be copolymerized with the polyester, e.g. styrene, a filler, e.g. colloidal silicic acid, and a polymerization catalyst, so as to completely embed the inorganic fibrous material in the mixture. The layers of vegetable fibres are then coated on one side only with the same mixture. The three layers are brought together with the coated sides of the outer layers facing the inner layer, and the laminated structure is pressed and cured by heating. The product has a fibre-reinforced solid core of synthetic resin with porous layers of vegetable fibres on either side. If the heat for curing is applied from one side only, part of the mixture will have time to migrate, and the product will be more porous on one side than on the other.
