A fusible interlining material is produced by a method which includes the steps of distributing over the surface of a support fabric or other flexible support sheet material a softenable synthetic resin in divided form and subjecting the resin to the action of a softening medium so that the resin coalesces to bond to the support material to form a discontinuous layer of discrete non-tacky nodules without substantially affecting the porosity of the support material. The particles of synthetic resin may be distributed evenly over the surface, in the form of discrete piles of powder, or as already formed nodules of the desired size. The synthetic resin may be thermoplastic, e.g. polythene, or a vinyl copolymer, which may be plasticized or may be mixed or blended with polymers, synthetic rubber or other suitable material. A solution or emulsion of the plasticizer may be sprayed on to the support material prior to the application of the resin, or the resin in divided form may be treated with the plasticizer solution or emulsion to produce a surface layer on the resin particles. The resin particles may be mixed powdered plasticizer or powdered plasticizing resin. The synthetic resin may be thermosetting which when heated will soften and cure to the " A " stage. The support material may be impregnated with a thermoplastic resin and then partially or fully dried prior to the application of the resin in divided form. The softening agent may be heat or other media, e.g. solvent which may be applied to the support material or resin either before or after the application of the resin to the support material. The nodules of resin may be evenly distributed over the whole or only over selected areas of one or both surfaces. The support material may be a woven textile material such as a cotton fabric. The interlining material may be laminated with a textile or other flexible sheet material so that the nodules lie between the flexible sheet material and the flexible support material by subjecting the synthetic resin to the action of a softening medium whilst the assembly is subjected to pressure.
