Abstract

In a modification of the process of Specification 850,791 for applying polymeric materials to fabrics, an allyl resinous material in monomeric or partially polymerized state is deposited on a fabric disposed in a gaseous medium such as air and caused to adhere to the fabric in the form of discrete, non-contiguous particles, if desired by the application of heat and pressure. Preferred allyl resinous materials are diallyl phthalate and diallyl isophthalate. The materials may also comprise polyesters with and without styrene, triallyl cyanurate, flame inhibitors such as diallyl chlorendate and antimony oxide, thermoplasts such as polyethylene, and catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, t.-butyl hydroperoxide and di-t.-butyl peroxide. The material may be applied to fabrics by dusting or by spraying a volatile solvent solution, e.g. in ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons or dioxane. The treated fabrics may be laminated to other fabrics, e.g. interlining materials, carpeting materials and shock absorbent packaging materials. In an example partially polymerized diallyl isophthalate is dusted on to a non-woven interlining fabric and heated to effect adherence, and the treated fabric is laminated under heat and pressure to a cotton fabric which has been sprayed with a methyl isobutyl ketone solution of t.-butylerbenzoate.ALSO:In a modification of the process of Specification 850791 for applying polymeric materials to fabrics, an allyl resinous material in monomeric or partially polymerised state is deposited on a fabric disposed in a gaseous medium such as air and caused to adhere to the fabric in the form of discrete, non-contiguous particles, if desired by the application of heat and pressure. The fabric may be a woven, knitted felted or matted fabric, foam rubber, leather or carpeting material, and the resinous material may be applied by dusting or by spraying as a solution or dispersion in a volatile organic solvent, which is subsequently removed. Preferred allyl resinous materials are diallyl phthalate and diallyl isophthalate. The materials may also comprise polyesters with and without styrene; triallyl cyanurate; flame inhibitors such as diallyl chlorendate and antimony oxide; thermoplasts such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride; cellulose; and catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, t.butyl hydroperoxide, di-t.butyl peroxide and t.butyl perbenzoate. Fabrics coated by the process of the invention may be laminated to other fabrics under heat and pressure. In an example a sheet of non-woven interlining fabric is coated by dusting with a composition of partially polymerised diallyl isophthalate which is caused to adhere to the fabric by infra red heating.
