Abstract
550,504. Moulding agglutinated fibrous sheets. BAKELITE, Ltd. July 8, 1941, No. 8626. Convention date, July 9, 1940. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A fibrous mouldable composition is made by laying slivers for example from garnets or cards on a conveyer belt to form a sheet, applying adhesive and thereafter impregnating with a resinous binder either fused or in solution. The slivers may be of cotton, hemp, jute or sisal and may be laid along or across the sheet or at any angle, e.g. one quarter lengthwise, one quarter crosswise and one quarter in each of two directions at an angle of 45 degrees. The adhesive may be rubber, e.g. in solution in naphtha, artificial rubber, rubber substitutes, or polyvinyl resins. The resin may be thermosetting, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde, or thermoplastic. Impregnation may be effected by passing the sheet between two permeable supporting belts through a solution, or applying rolls may be used. Pigments and coating materials, e.g. wood flour, may be incorporated in the sheet, and rubber sheets may be combined with the sheets prior to moulding. Laminated articles and safety belting may be moulded from the sheet. Moulding may be carried out by placing the sheet over the cavity of a mould and pressing the sheet into the cavity by a plunger, with or without heating. The sheets may be pre-heated.
