Abstract

Engraved moulded articles are made by superposing a number of layers of plastic material of different colours impregnated with a synthetic resin binder, consolidating the pack by heat and pressure and then engraving the surface so that one or more of the differently-coloured layers is exposed to produce a decorative effect. In a preferred construction the layers comprise sheets of fibrous material, but layers of loose impregnated cotton flock may be used or loose fibrous materials may be inserted between two sheets of material. In a modification of the process, the upper layers are cut through to form a pattern before being assembled and consolidated, and loose fibrous material may be placed between two previously cut sheets and consolidated.
