Abstract

Slabs and other articles made from cement and a fibrous material, e.g. asbestos, are coloured by applying a dry mixture of colour and cement and/or fibre to the moist article and consolidating by pressure. The colour mixture may be applied uniformly or in patterns, e.g. through stencils. As an example, in the manufacture of asbestos-cement sheets, a dry mixture of colour, asbestos, and cement is sprinkled on to the web just prior to its passing over the suction box, the suction drawing the coloured mixture into the wet felted mass. The colour is consolidated by the pressure applied when the web is wound on to the forming roll.
