Sheets of thermoplastic are treated to imitate a textile or knitted material or plaited work by being dyed all over to the natural fundamental colour of the material to be imitated and then printed with a colour pattern imitating the shades of the surface texture of the material and reproducing the natural outlines of the elements thereof, and are then embossed with a pattern which reproduces the surface texture of the material to be imitated. The embossed pattern may be in register with the printed pattern, as in the material to be imitated, or out of register with it. The thermoplastic may be plasticized polyvinyl chloride and the sheets may be applied to a backing or used without a backing.
