[Class 87 (ii)] A jig for use in dividing slabs of butter, soap, &c. into blocks of predetermined size comprises a row of spaced parallel guides 2, 3, opposite a similar row 2<1>, 3<1>. In use, the slab of butter &c. is placed upon a supporting surface constituted in part by a removable frame-like tray 8, and a wire cutter, extending between the guides and being held against pairs of edges 5 thereof in turn, is pressed downwardly through the slab. Similar guides 4, 4<1> facilitate longitudinal division of the slab. The blocks 4, 4<1> may be replaced by a front stop or by other blocks 6, which are detachably held at the side of the jig, for the purpose of cutting different weights. The guide blocks may extend from a removable frame surrounding the base, or the guide blocks may be replaced by pegs or slotted strips of wood. A tool 10 for separating the cut blocks is held in a bracket 11. A cutter comprises two parallel side arms 13, a taut cutting wire 16, a bar 14 in tension and a bar 15 in compression. The bar 15 is spaced such a distance from the wire 16 that when a slab is cut horizontally from a large block by the wire, the bar 15 sliding on top of the block and acting as a gauge, the thickness of the slab is a proper thickness for enabling it to be cut into small blocks in the jig. The cutter is removably supported on the jig by arms 18 having notched upper ends.
