Abstract
565,865. Actuation of switches. HUGHES, W. March 2, 1943, No. 3399. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Groups XII and XXXVII] To ensure that an operation, e.g. the ejection of coke, shall take place only when two machines, e.g. the guide and pusher machines, associated with a battery of coke ovens are in appropriate relative positions, each machine is caused to send an electric impulse as it passes each oven to step a separate switch member, the switch being closed to permit the operation only when the positions of the two members correspond. As shown, the switch comprises contact members carried by a disc 25 and a contact operating member carried by a similar coaxial disc (not shown). The driving mechanism for each disc comprises an electric motor coupled by a centrifugal clutch and cords 34 to a bar 35 which carries pivoted driving pawls 37, 38 which co-operate with pins on the disc. The direction of rotation of the motors depends on the polarity of the impulse and this in turn depends on the direction of movement of the associated machine. A member 39 pivoted to the bar 35 and coupled by a pin-and-slot connection to the framework comes between two pins at each actuation and prevents overdrive.
