Abstract

713,388. Alternating-current commutator motors. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 15, 1953 [Aug. 5, 1952], No. 19671/52. Class 35. The brush-gear of a Schrage motor has two actuators, one controlling the brush separation and the other regulating the position of the brush-gear axis, the combined control means being adapted to select such speed-torque curves as are desired to perform a given cycle of operation either for motoring or generating. As shown, a pilot motor M drives one brush rocker F through pinion A, whilst the other rocker G is driven through helical pinions C and D. Pinion C is fixed directly to a spindle which carries pinion B, and pinion D is free to slide along spindle H which carries pinion E, but is keyed to the spindle so that members D and H rotate together. The drive from motor M to pinion C is irreversible and cannot be transmitted from the pinion C through pinions B, A to the pilot motor. Two thrustors J, K operate by link mechanism L on to the helical pinion D which is able to take up three positions. In the neutral position shown, only one thrustor is excited, and any movement of the pilot motor M moves the brush rockers F, G, in opposite directions. With the pilot motor at rest and with the brush-gear in the neutral position shown, if both thrustors are excited the helical pinion D rises. This axial sliding of the pinion D causes rotation of the spindle H and pinion E, together with a corresponding movement of the brushrocker G. Similarly, if both thrustors are de-energized, the pinion D falls and the rocker G moves in the opposite direction. This movement of the rocker G in one direction or the other about the neutral setting results in forward or backward shift of the brush axis. The Schrage motor may be used for driving a sugar centrifugal, joint operation of brush separation and brush shift producing a required cycle of operation with maximum efficiency. The brush-gear has backward shift for conditions of heavy accelerating torque, and forward shift'under condition of high retarding torque. Specifications 366,686 and 534,430 are referred to.
