[Class 126] A fitting, adapted to be substituted for the solid fuel grate in a kitchen range or open fireplace to enable gas to be used, comprises a hearth box a having a hit-and-miss slide b for the admission of air for combustion, superposed partitioned refractory elements c, d, the latter fitted with burners e, and a rear air-heating chamber f traversed by tubes h through which pass the hot gases from the elements c, d and around which the air admitted by the hearth box flows on its way to the burner chamber in the element d. The air enters the heating chamber through an opening f<1> and passes over vertical partitions f<2> at the sides of the tubes to passages leading to the burner chambers d<3>; the hot gases are delivered to the tubes h through rear collecting spaces c<3>, d<6>. The box a and chamber f are of metal while the elements c, d, which have cut-away partitions cl, d<1> disposed at right angles to each other, are formed from a porous refractory material consisting of 60 per cent fireclay, 20 per cent sawdust, and 20 per cent coke grit. Complementary apertures c<8>, d<8>, Fig. 5, controlled by a damper, are provided in one side wall to enable a portion of the gases to pass to an oven flue, while the tops of the partitions c' provide a grid to support cooking utensils.
