Abstract

563,025. Electrolysis. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Jan. 19; 1943, No. 979. Convention date, June 2, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41] [Also in Group II] To produce high lustre durability and a surface capable of being painted on the surface of zinc or cadmium or metal coated therewith, the zinc &c. is immersed, e.g. for a period not exceeding 60 seconds, in a chromic acid bath which includes minute amounts of sulphuric and nitric acids, the ratio of the chromic acid to the combined amounts of the other acids being at least 100 to 1 and the nitric acid being present in an amount in excess of the sulphuric acid. A transparent enamel such as an alkyde resin mixed with a melamine resin and dissolved in petrolein naphtha, may be applied after the zinc &c. has been dipped in the acid. In an example, a bath comprises 120 grams of chromic acid, 0.25-0.50 grams of sulphuric acid and 0.8-1.20 grams of nitric acid all per litre of solution. A zinc coating for treatment as set out above, is electro-deposited from a bath containing 8 ozs. per gallon of zinc cyanide, 4'of sodium cyanide and 7 of caustic soda with anodes formed by remelting scrap die castings.
