Abstract
562,635. Opposed piston internalcombustion engines. WAGNER, W., and SWANN, J. March 2, 1943, No. 3454. [Class 7 (ii)] A diesel engine has opposed pistons 33, 34 working in a cylinder 11 and connected to the crank-shaft 29 through pivoted rocker arms 38, 39, the latter arm having an eccentric fulcrum provided with locking .means so that the position of the travel of piston 34 can be varied. A plate 1 with a curved portion 2 has welded thereto front and rear walls 4, 5 and detachable end walls 6, 7. The cylinder 11 and water jacket 12 are carried in cradle plates'8, 9, the cylinder has inlet ports 14 at one end and exhaust ports 15 at the other, the webs between the latter ports being cored to provide water spaces. An opening 25 in the rear plate 5 admits air to an air jacket 26 surrounding the cylinder. The crank-shaft having opposed cranks carries an external fly-wheel 31. Each piston has a head portion 35 separated from the piston body by a space 36. The rocker arm 39 is journalled on a shaft 43 mounted in eccentrics 44 and rocked by lever 47 to angular positions which may be fixed by a screw 48. A rock-shaft 50 of an air pump mounted in a housing secured to the crank-case is operated through levers 67, 68 from the rocker 38. The pump comprises segmental intake chambers 57 with intake plates 58 and inlets 59 serving as breathers to the crank-case. Spring-loaded valves 62 admit air to the drum 53 from the chambers 57 and when the wings 63 on the rock-shaft are operated, air is delivered through outlet valves 65 into a space 56 leading to opening 25 and cylinder 11. Fuel oil is supplied to a central injector from a pump 69 operated by a cam which is driven by a chain 71 from'the crankshaft., Maximum efficiency for a given load may be obtained by altering the port events by bodily axial movement of the cylinder by means of nuts 73. For starting or for low speed running the compression may be raised by setting the lever 47 as in Fig. 1, while for normal running the compression may be reduced -by moving the lever 47 towards its horizontal position.
