Abstract

562,308. Mixing fibres &c. ; lapforming apparatus ; openers. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and WILLIAMS, T. C. Sept. 22, 1942, No. 11837. [Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii)] Fibrous materials are mixed with comminuted materials, e.g. adhesives, powders or other fibres, and formed into fleeces, wads, laps, bands, or slivers by opening the fibrous material and conveying it in an air stream to collecting means described in Specification No. 404,686 ; 423,321 ; or 483,653, and introducing the comminuted material at a controlled rate into the air stream. The comminuted material may be fed directly into the air stream or indirectly into the stream and may be fed from a hopper of V-cross-section with a pivoted side which is periodically actuated by a cam to open and close the hopper, the feed being varied by adjustable stops which adjust the opening of the hopper while the speed of the cam is adjustable. As shown, the comminuted material may be introduced directly into the air stream below the feed roller e from a hopper p<4>, a rotating brush w flicking the material between 'flaps v<1>, y<1> ; or from a hopper p<5> to the space between the upper surface of the beater f and its cover f <1> ; or from a hopper p<6> into the air stream at the point n<1> where it emerges from under the beater into the region between the beater and the collecting means l<1>, l<2> ; or from a hopper p<7> in the same region through a slot j in the upper bounding sheet thereof. The comminuted material may be introduced indirectly into the air stream by feeding it between the laps of fibrous material fed to the beater. When bands or slivers are to be formed as described in Specification No. 423,321, the comminuted material may be introduced into each of the partitioned spaces between the beater and the collecting means from hoppers p<5> or p<7>.
