Abstract

561,586. Blowpipe burners. KERSHAW, J., KERSHAW, J., and KERSHAW, L. W. Sept. 21,. 1942, No. 13269. [Class 75 (i)] [Also in Groups II and XXII] In a method of and apparatus for flamecutting metal parts such as the chain sprockets of military tanks, the cutting flame operates within a closely surrounding stream of cold water so that the cut surface is immediately cooled and hardened. A bed 1 carries a rotatable table 3 receiving the sprocket blank 4 and a pillar 5 carries an arm 6 fitted with an adjustable nozzle holder 7 supplied with gas by pipes. 8, 9 through controls 10, 11. The nozzle, Fig. 4, has a central cutting portion 12 of usual form enclosed by a water chamber comprising parts 14 ... 14a supplied by a pipe 16, the part 14a having a ring of water jets 15 surrounding the flame. In some cases an annular water outlet may be provided. Additiona water jets 17, 18 are directed on to the worl from lines 19, 20 suppliec from a line which is als( connected to the pipe 16 The water is supplied fron a pump driven by a motor controlled by a mercury switch 25 and a solenoic 26 in the circuit of a switcl 27 on the oxygen contro so that the water supply is turned on and off with the cutting oxygen. The switch 27 may also control the traversing motor of the arm 6 so that traverse does not begin until cutting oxygen is turned on.
