Abstract
A frothing agent for use in concentrating ores is obtained by refluxing an aqueous alcoholic solution of dipentene, limonene, a or b -pinene or mixtures thereof in the presence of sulphuric acid or an aromatic sulphonic acid. In examples, a -pinene is refluxed with aqueous methanol containing sulphuric acid or p-toluenesulphonic acid monohydrate and excess methanol removed from the product after neutralization. Results obtained in the froth flotation of copper, gold and lead-zinc ores are compared when the products and also pine oil and low boiling cresylic acid are employed as frothers. Sulphide and phosphate ores are mentioned. Sulphate turpentine obtained in the sulphate paper process may be used as starting material. Specification 556,579 is referred to.
