Abstract

560,782. Treating gases with liquids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Montgomery, T. N.). Sept. 14, 1942, No. 12913. [Class 55 (ii)] Apparatus for treating gases with liquids, and especially with liquids containing suspended solids, comprises a tower containing deformable resilient bodies such as rubber balls and having means for agitating the bodies. One use is for the production of calcium cyanide by absorbing hydrocyanic acid from gases containing it by contacting them with lime slurry, any deposit formed on the deformable bodies being removed by deformation. A tower 1 is provided with grids 2 supporting rubber balls 7 which are agitated by helical members 3 rotated by gearing 4, 5. The pitch and diameter of each helix is sufficiently large to enable the balls to move about within each helix, and to pass through it. The gas to be treated enters at 10 and passes to an outlet 11, and the liquid is supplied at 8 and drawn off through a pipe 9.
