Abstract
699,620. Purifying gas. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., W. C., COOPER, C., and CLYNE, O. Sept. 27. 1952, No. 24265/52. Class 55(ii) [Also in Group I] To avoid the deposition of scale caused by using hard water in ammonia washers, the water is treated prior to entering the washer with water that has already been used for washing the gas and which contains ammonia and carbon dioxide. The treatment apparatus consists of a tank 5 containing an axially mounted rising tube 3 within which hard water from a pipe 2a and weak liquor containing fixed ammonia and carbon dioxide from a pipe 7 are mixed, a circulation as indicated by the arrows being produced. Calcium and magnesium carbonates are precipitated during this circulation and eventually settle into a sump to be withdrawn periodically through a valve 9. Clear liquid is withdrawn at 10 and passed to the ammonia washers. Specifications 331,592, [Class 55(ii)], 357,712, 389,653 and 507,029, [both in Group XXVI], are referred to.
