Abstract

673,187. Purifying gases. HAWKES, C. T., and HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW, Ltd. Dec. 19, 1950 [Jan. 19, 1950], No. 1506/50. Class 55 (ii). A process for removing hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen cyanide if present from fuel gases comprises washing the gases three or more times with an aqueous alkaline suspension of hydrated oxide of iron, or carbonate or basic carbonate of iron which after use is revivified by aeration, some only of the gas washings, but at least two, being effected with fresh or revivified suspension while the other or each of the other gas washings is effected with used suspension from a later, gas washing. As illustrated, the gas to be treated passes through scrubbers 1, 2 and 3 in series, scrubbers 2 and 3 being supplied with fresh or revivified suspension from an aerator 10 via the line 31 and the scrubber 1 with used suspension from the scrubber 3 by lines 20, 21, pump 13 and line 24. The used suspension from scrubbers 1 and 2 is returned by lines 27, 28, pump 11 and line 29 to the aerator 10. Collecting vessels 8 and 6 may be placed at intermediate points of the circulation system for the used suspension from the scrubbers 3 and scrubbers 1 and 2 respectively. In modifications four and five scrubbers are employed, two or three washings being effected by fresh or revivified suspension.
