Abstract
1331114 Treatment of effluent gases SHALE CORP 10 Nov 1970 [12 Nov 1969] 53504/70 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from a hot gas stream (>250‹ C.) by mixing with water followed by NH 3 gas (1-3 moles per mole of SO 2 ) at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 3 , then cooling to below said decomposition temperature to form NH 4 <SP>+</SP> salt particles, and removing said particles. NO 2 in the gas stream is also removed as NH 4 NO 2 or NH 4 NO 2 and SO 3 is removed as (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . The temperature of the gas mixture during NH 3 addition is preferably at least 160‹ F. Entrained salt particles may be removed by scrubbing, and NH 3 regenerated from the scrubbing solution by (a) heating to at least 250‹ F. to form NH 3 and SO 2 which is passed over hot ZnO, CaO, PbO, MnO, MgO or calcined dolomite to absorb SO 2 , (b) by precipitating Ca salts from the liquor and heating to drive off NH 3 , or (c) by recycling the liquor to concentrate it, then cooling to crystallize NH 4 salts which may be decomposed and the gases separated as in (a).
