Abstract
Phosgene is decomposed to hydrochloric and carbonic acids by intimately contacting it with activated carbon and water. One volume of carbon should be used for 40-70 volumes phosgene on an hourly throughput basis and 8 parts water for 1 part phosgene, so that the concentration of the hydrochloric acid produced does not exceed 10 per cent. Phosgene, which may be mixed with other waste gases, but from which organic solvent vapours have preferably been removed, may be passed up a tower filled with carbon down which water flows. Several towers may be used in series, or towers divided into carbon-filled compartments, each say 1 metre high, and each with separate water supply, may be used. The carbon can, if necessary, be reactivated by steam.
