Abstract
560,289. Valve-gear &c. ; casings. DAVEY, PAXMAN, & Ltd., and PAXMAN, E. P. July 14, 1942, No. 9781. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A cam-shaft mounting comprises a cam box 1 formed as a separate component and providing bearings 3, 11 for a cam-shaft 4 and a rocker shaft 5 both extending through the length of the cam box, which is provided with a cover 2 supporting a fuel pump 26 and other components, so that the assembly can be placed in position upon and fixed to an engine crank-case. For an engine having two inclined banks of cylinders A, the cam box is mounted between the banks and is formed integral with a hollow member 7 with perforated walls, bolted to a horizontal joint face 8 on the crank-case. The cam-shaft 4 is formed with bosses 10. supported by bearings in webs 3 which also carry the bearings 11 for the rocker shaft 5. The cover 2 of the cam box is secured by bolts engaging sockets in the box, packing 'being provided. Push rods 17 connecting the rockers 6 to valve rockers in the cylinder heads pass through apertures 16 in the box. Gearing 18 for driving the cam-shaft is housed in a casing bolted to the end of the box 1 and connected to an end cover of the crankcase. The opposite end of the camshaft carries a bevel gear driving a governor supported on a casing which encloses the bevel gearing and is bolted to the adjacent end of the box 1. The fuel pumps 26 are secured by bolts 27 upon the cover 2, which is preferably formed in two parts secured together by bolts 29 at a central transverse plane, and a gear-wheel on the camshaft at this position engages a driven gear operating the fuel pumps and housed in a casing 32 bolted upon a joint face 33.
