Abstract

1,101,580. Balancing. BRIGGS & STRATTON CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1966 [June 16, 1966], No.46683/66. Heading F1M. An internal-combustion engine having a crankshaft 13 with an eccentric counterbalance 19 thereon opposite its crank-pin, a cam-shaft 15 driven by the crank-shaft and opposite end walls on the crank-case from which the crank-shaft and the cam-shaft are rotatably supported comprises means on the crank-shaft and the camshaft providing axial extensions thereof which project beyond one of the end walls of the crankcase, a cover 55 secured to the end wall and co-operating therewith to define an external compartment on the crank-case into which the shaft extensions project, an eccentric counterweight 32 in the compartment, the eccentric counterweight having a hub 33 bearing means concentric with the crank-shaft axis and supportingly engaging the hub to mount the eccentric counterweight for free rotation about the crank-shaft axis and drive transmission means in the compartment connecting the hub of the counterweight with the projecting portion of the cam-shaft to drive the counterweight at crank-shaft speed but counter to the direction of crank-shaft rotation and with the eccentric masses of the counterweight and crank-shaft counterbalances in such phase relation as to be opposite one another whenever the crank-pin is in a position medially between its two dead centre positions. The crank-shaft and the cam-shaft may have axial extensions that project beyond both of the end walls of the crank-case, the cover, eccentric counterweight bearing and drive transmission means being duplicated at both end walls of the crank-case. The drive transmission means for each counterweight may comprise a chain drive. The cam-shaft may comprise axially separable sections and means detachably securing the camshaft sections together.
