Abstract

775,046. Balancing engines. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Feb. 14, 1955 [Feb. 13, 1954], No. 4358/55. Class 122 (3). In an internal combustion or other reciprocating engine contra-rotating balancing masses 19, 20 driven from the engine crankshaft are enclosed in a housing 29 supported by a crankshaft bearing. In the arrangement shown the masses 19, 20 are secondary balancing masses and rotate at twice crankshaft speed, the mass 20 being formed by two axially spaced parts 201, 20<SP>11 </SP>between which the mass 19 passes with a small clearance during rotation. The masses are secured respectively to shafts 21 and 22 that are parallel to the crankshaft 11, mounted in bearings 25, 26 and 27, 28 in the housing 29, geared together by gear wheels 23, 24 and driven from the crankshaft by a chain and sprocket gear comprising a drive sprocket 36 on the crankshaft and a driven sprocket 37 or an extension of the shaft 21 journalled in a bearing 35 carried by a bracket 34 integral with the crankshaft bearing cap 12. The housing 29 is integral with the crankshaft bearing cap 30, closed at the bottom by a cover 31 and secured to the bearing 13 by bolts accessible from inside the housing. Both the housing 29 and bracket 34 may be separate from the bearing caps 30 and 12 respectively. In a modification, the gear wheels 23 and 24 are mounted in a chamber within the housing 29 and operate as a pump to remove oil collected in the housing, the sprocket 37 is fitted adjacent the housing on the shaft 21 which extends only a short distance beyond the bearing 25 and the sprocket 36 is combined with the counterweight 15.
