Abstract

560,205. Tube expanders. YORK RAISING & DYEING CO., Ltd., and WAITE, V. Sept. 23, 1942, No. 13373. [Class 83 (iv)] Sockets are formed on the ends of pipes of ductile metal such as brass, copper, aluminium by pressing the end of the pipe on to a tool rotating at high speed and having a number of separated surfaces which flare the pipe as it advances on the tool and then carry the flaring along the pipe to form a socket of the required length without further increasing the diameter. The socket is formed by pressing the end of the pipe against a rotating tool having a shank 3 to fit in a rotary mandrel, a collar 4 to serve as a stop for positioning the tool in the mandrel and for limiting the length of the socket, and a boss 5 of regular pentagonal or other polygonal section the sides of which extend forward and are tapered to form a frustated pyramidal extension 7. The corners between the sides 6 of the boss are chamfered tangentially to form a number of surfaces 8 the diameter of the circle circumscribing which is equal to the internal diameter of the socket. The corners of the angles between the sides of the extension are similarly-chamfered.
