Abstract

667,143. Soldered joints; tube expanders. ALLETT, R. K., and PARSONS SHERWIN & CO., Ltd. Oct. 21, 1949, No. 27094/49. Class 83 (iv). A method of joining the ends of two equal diameter tubes 1 and 2 of copper or copper alloy, comprises expanding the end of the tube 1 with a tool 3, coating either the inside of the expanded portion 8 or the outside of one end of the tube 2 with a solder and flux paste 12, inserting the end of the tube 2 in the expanded portion 8, heating the ends and allowing them to cool to effect a permanent joint. When the tubes 1 and 2 are of different diameters the end of the smaller tube is expanded to the internal diameter of the larger tube into which it is inserted. The tool for expanding the pipe comprises a cylindrical guide portion 4, an inclined bevelled surface 5, the slope of which ranges from 10 degrees to 43 degrees, according to size and wall thickness of the tube, a cylindrical portion 6 of diameter equal to the expanded diameter of the tube and a head portion 7 which also acts as a stop 10. The tube 1 may be held in a former to ensure symmetrical entry of the tool.
