Abstract
559,014. Cable joints; cable end constructions. JARRARD, W. J., and PAYNE, A. S. W. July 27, 1942, No. 10510. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] The conductors are brought out from a cable insulated with thermoplastic material by passing the conductors through a washer of thermoplastic material which is then applied to the flanged out cable end and welded thereto by diathermic welding. The conductors 12 embedded in polyolefine plastic &c. 14 surrounded by a braided copper screen 13, a cotton sheath and an outer sheath 16 of polyvinyl ester &c., are exposed at the end and the outer sheath 16 and screening 13 flared to form a flange. A washer, which may consist of a soft layer 19 of polyvinyl chloride and a harder layer 20 of methyl methacrylate &c., is applied to the flange after a metal yoke 17 with arms 18 for earthing the braiding 13. The assembly is then held in a jig comprising blocks 21, 22 recessed to receive the flange and washer and pressed together by springs 27. Ring electrodes 23, 24 connected to high frequency supply leads 28, 29 are held in the jig and effect diathermic welding of the insulation as described in Specification 555,054, [Group XI].
